With the aim of identifying, with objective criteria, the scientific groups of the community with an outstanding trajectory, the Junta de Castilla y León, through ORDER EDU/1006/2014, of November 21, regulated the recognition of Consolidated Research Units. Through this regulation, a mechanism was designed to increase the scientific quality and the socioeconomic impact of the research activity, giving concrete form to the specific objective related to Excellent Science and Technological Leadership within Program 2 of the RIS3 of Castilla y León 2014-2020.

The Spanish Center for Pulsed Lasers by the director Luis Roso managed to achieve this recognition in 2015,  the group being named as the Consolidated Research Unit –UIC– 167. This distinction was renewed in 2018.
