STRATOLASER aims to strengthen the protection of the EU’s space infrastructure by developing an innovative and cost-effective active space debris removal system. This system is based on the deorbiting of space debris ranging in size from a few centimeters to several tens of centimeters, using direct laser ablation technology fired from a stratospheric balloon.
By eliminating atmospheric attenuation and laser beam scattering, the system drastically reduces laser power requirements, while offering significantly lower costs, greater maintainability, enhanced versatility, and broader orbital access compared to space-based solutions.
