The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is one of the main financial instruments of the EU’s cohesion policy, aimed at reducing disparities between the levels of development of European regions and improving the standard of living in the less-favored ones.
The term Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS) refers to cutting-edge R&D&I infrastructures which, either individually or as part of a coordinated network of facilities, provide services that the national R&D&I system—and the scientific, technological, and industrial community that comprises it—need to carry out high-quality, state-of-the-art research and technological development. These infrastructures also promote technology transfer, innovation, and the dissemination, exchange, and preservation of knowledge.
In round numbers, operations totaling €244 million have been financed. The total amount of ERDF co-financing has been €169 million, which has contributed to improving infrastructures in 62% of the ICTS. This represents an average co-financing rate of 69%.
The national co-financing required to complement the ERDF funding and cover the full project budget was provided by each center managing the respective Scientific and Technical Infrastructure.
