The ultimate goal is the design and characterization of a compact mass spectrometer for analysis and detection of laser ionized species at atmospheric pressure. The applications will be the detection of trace explosives and other volatile substances, the detection of substances in human exhalation for disease diagnosis and analysis of the dynamics of plasmas created by filamentation.
