Researchers have detailed a critical connection associated with a major environmental cause of silicosis and a form of lung cancer. Exposure to crystalline silica (CS) is common to a variety of industrial operations including mining, quarrying, sandblasting, rock drilling, road construction, pottery making, stone masonry, and tunneling operations. Chronic silica exposure causes severe health complications eventually leading to the irreversible, debilitating disease silicosis. Approximately 2 million U.S. workers potentially are exposed to breathable crystalline silica.
