TECHNICAL FEATURES"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Spanish Pulsed Lasers Centre strengthens its innovative strategy by launching auxiliary equipment. Among them, the additional units with which the CLPU increases the spill-overs effects of the knowledge-economy edge. One of both has encouraged this strategic activity being the first unit on service of the Centre. It is the Microscopy Unit.<\/p>\n<p>The microscopy includes a set of different techniques and methods to make visible small dimension objects which results imperceptible to the human eye. The Spanish Pulsed Lasers Centre contributes to this area of technological support research in Chemistry, Geology or Engineering with two types of equipment: one of them is the Atomic Force Microscope and the other one is the Scanning Electron Microscope.<\/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subtit_section h3_tit_line bottom20\">Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The SEM of CLPU is an EVO<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>HD25 microscope supplied by Carl Zeiss Microscopy.<\/p>\n<p>The SEM working procedure consists of a focused beam of accelerated electrons that scans the surface of a specimen. From the interaction of this electron beam with the sample, different types of signals can be collected by detectors installed in the vacuum chamber and processed by a control program to obtain high-resolution images (&lt; 10nm).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Specifications:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Electron thermionic gun with a LaB6 cathode (EVO<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>HD is equipped with a high-gloss &nbsp;source which, for low acceleration voltages, increases up to 10 times the brightness compared to standard LaB6 filaments)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Large high vacuum chamber: 420 mm diameter and 330 mm heigh&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>5-axis motorized stage<\/li>\n<li>Carousel for up to 9 samples (12 mm bases)<\/li>\n<li>Working pressure ranges: high vacuum(10<sup>-4<\/sup> Pa) and variable pressures (10 &#8211; 273 Pa)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.clpu.es\/src\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Imagen-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"668\" height=\"97\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clpu.es\/src\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Imagen-3.png 668w, https:\/\/www.clpu.es\/src\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Imagen-3-300x44.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>SE \u2013 Secondary Electron Detector of Everhart-Thornley type: enables working in a wide range of voltages (1kV &#8211; 30 kV) to obtain topographic and structural information of the sample surface.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle; text-align: justify;\">\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>VPSE \u2013 Variable Pressure Secondary Electron Detector: suitable to prevent charging effects on non-conductive samples. The gas neutralizes the electrons trapped on the surface, stabilizing the emission of the secondary electrons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>BSD \u2013 Backscattered Electron Detector of 5 segments: the emission of backscattered electrons from the sample is related to the atomic number of the elements that are present in it. This technique is of interest in geology, metallurgy, material physics, etc. Besides, in its topographic mode, it can reveal surface detail. It works in all vacuum modes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-635\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clpu.es\/src\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Imagen-2-d22.png\" width=\"211\" height=\"145\" style=\"margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; display: block;\" \/><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>STEM \u2013 Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy Detector: tin this type of microscopy, the detector is detected underneath the sample, so the specimen must be thin enough to allow electrons to pass through. The configuration allows the placement. The configuration allows the placement of the diode-type detector at a very short distance from the sample, thus improving the resolution, which is comparable to that of a BFTEM. It can work in variable pressure mode.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle; text-align: justify;\">\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>EDS \u2013 Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy Detector: this device provides the chemical composition of a specimen by analyzing its X-ray emission. It is a technique widely used in material science, since, in addition to the information on the elements contained in the sample; it can give information about its surface distribution and even its concentrations. The detector is a 20 mm<sup>2<\/sup> SDD from Oxford Instrument controlled by AZtec<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> software.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>EBS \u2013 Electron Backscattered Diffraction Detector: this technique can determine the crystallographic orientation of crystalline and semi-crystalline samples. The HKL Nordlys detector is controlled by AZtec\u00ae software and provided with CHANNEL 5\u00ae analysis program. The CLPU will not be involved in the preparation of the different specimens.
